It’s fair to say the cardigan’s appeal is truly universal: Everyone from men to women to children to grandpas consider the classic knit silhouette a closet essential. And for good reason. In addition to an abundance of layering possibilities (over T-shirts, under jackets, with fancy party attire), the sweater’s cooler cousin keeps you cozy and comes in a variety of styles. This season, I’m coveting chunky, oversized options as practical as they are pretty. Here, I’ve compiled 6 of my favorite cardigans that won’t put you in credit card debt.

STYLING TIPS
5 WAYS TO WEAR FLARES
Think flower crown-wearing hippie chicks are the only ones who can wear flared denim? Think again. The figure-flattering style looks great on women of all shapes and heights (the flare balances out your hips) and is a welcome respite from the long reign of the skinny jean. Whether you opt for a light, vintage wash or an inky, black style, they are bound to become one of your most beloved (and worn) wardrobe staples this season. Still not convinced? See how we style the same versatile $60 pair 5 different ways. If that’s not bang for your buck, I don’t know what is. Peace.

HOW TO HAVE GREAT STYLE WITHOUT SPENDING MONEY
Revamping your wardrobe each season shouldn’t cost as much as rent. In fact, you’d beshocked at how many cool new outfit combos you can create using what you already have tucked away in your closet. (There’s a reason you decided to keep that skirt you almost gave up years ago.) So pull that breezy sundress you just packed away back out because nothing is off limits when it comes to breathing new life into your winter style. With the right cozy pairings and bold accessories, anything can feel new and fresh again. Find out how to style last season’s staples in a new and creative way so that your fashion feels fresh without doling out any cash.
THE SCARF: Not only can a silk scarf be worn in myriad ways, it's a true staple piece that remains fashionably relevant no matter what the season. Add one to a monochrome ensemble for a pop of color or find a creative way to incorporate it into an outfit you're bored of. Wear it around your neck, on your wrist as a bracelet or tied onto the handle of your favorite carryall.
THE BREEZY DRESS: Get excited: Your favorite breezy sundress from last summer does not need to be relegated to the back of your closet. Layer a formfitting turtleneck underneath to update it for the chiller season. Pair with opaque tights and moto-style booties, and you're rocking '90s style like a pro.
THE JUMPSUIT: Update a sleeveless jumpsuit for wintertime by putting a tailored button-up shirt underneath. Complete this polished office-to-evening look with a structured clutch and bold lip.
THE SKIRT: If you haven't already, investing in a mid-length skirt is a must as the feminine silhouette having a major moment right now. If you already own a full-length skirt that you love, a simple trip to the seamstress can result in a piece that looks and feels entirely new and perfectly on trend. I love the style worn with a chunky knit and knee-high boots.

STYLISH SKIRTS FOR LESS THAN $100
Instead of reaching for your trusty black pants yet again, why not build your workweek attire around a stylish skirt? Whether you prefer a pencil style or a wrap version, they add instant polish to a chunky knit and look as great with tights as they do with knee-high boots. Just because the temperature is dropping doesn’t mean your style standards have to.
Embellished: H&M $70
Windowpane Print: Zara $100
Piped Herringbone: Dorothy Perkins $44
Wrapped Up: Topshop $95
Retro Red: Dickins and Jones $80
Gunmetal: Banana Republic $90
Python Print: Altuzarra for Target $35
Textured Waves: Warehouse $63
Cable-Knit: Joe Fresh $39

winter fashion
THE SECRET LAYERING WEAPON YOU NEED NOW
As soon as the windchill rating is part of the weather report you know your layering game needs to be on point. Sure, you’re great at layering a V-neck sweater over a button-up shirt (thank you, prep school), and you can get pretty darn creative with a pair of scarves (thank you, Captain Jack Sparrow), but have you been overlooking the most important layering staple of all? Believe it or not, the turtleneck is every fashion girl’s secret weapon come winter. Here are three ways to incorporate it into your work, weekend and night-out ensembles.
The Foundation
A thin, fitted style in a neutral color like black, cream or navy is ideal for winter layering.
Extra Fine Merino Turtleneck Sweater, Uniqlo $30
Work
A fitted turtleneck gets you through a blustery commute thanks to covering your neck (you can even forgo a scarf), but it's still thin enough to work in an overheated office. Tuck into a structured A-line skirt and finish with flat suede boots, a belt and a seriously warm coat.
Wool coat with shell detail, Miu Miu $3195; Reversible belt, American Apparel $46; Olette tall suede boots, Nine West $179; Suede patchwork tote, Ecote $129
Weekend
This look conjurs images of hikes in the English countryside (Prince William not included). Layer your turtleneck under a bright flannel (leaving the top few buttons undone), and throw on a pair of casual skinny jeans. Top with a plush coat and flat Chelsea boots.
Flannel cozy shirt, Madewell $80; Wool-blend coat, H&M $129; 811 mid-rise skinny jeans, J Brand $200; Snakeskin effect Chelsea boots, Pretty Ballerinas $262
Evening
Thought it was too cold to wear that minidress? Wrong! Make like Twiggy by layering a turtleneck underneath your sequin shift dress. Add closed-toe heels, opaque tights, an oversized shearling moto jacket and kohl-rimmed eyes to complete the evening ensemble.
Moon beamer sequin shift, French Connection $288; Oversized moto jacket, Helmut Lang $1395; Metallic heel pumps, DSquared $574; Matte black opaque tights, Wolford $45; Piper bag, Lauren Merkin Handbags $225; Le Stylo waterproof long lasting eyeliner, Lancome $27

ALEXANDER WANG X H&M
I don’t need to remind you that Alexander Wang's H&M collection has hit stores. I probably also don’t need to remind you it’s chock-full of seriously cool, urban-infused sportswear. I may need to remind you, however, that you don’t professionally run triathlons (or if you do, high five!). With that in mind, I'll show you how I plan to style these ultra-sporty pieces into everyday outfits. Because you probably shouldn’t go out in a head-to-toe boxing look (or if you do, high five!).
I love how the cutouts and sheer panels in this dress break up an otherwise all-black outfit. I would style it with flat shoes, girly socks and a white bag. T-Shirt Dress, Alexander Wang x H&M $149.
I'm a sucker for good outerwear, and this fun take on a moto jacket is the perfect thing to throw on with flared jeans and a great hat for a simply cool cold-weather look. Cropped Down Jacket, Alexander Wang x H&M $399.
In my book there's no such thing as having too many neutral sweaters, and this one will make a nice addition to the assortment of gray knits I already own. Paired with a sleek leather midi skirt, ankle booties and topped with a field jacket, this version easily takes me from the office to dinner. Grey Sweater, Alexander Wang x H&M $149.
I'll be replacing my ubiquitous leather skinnies with this metallic pair come winter. A chunky knit over a menswear shirt and some suede pumps makes them office appropriate. Metallic Band Pants, Alexander Wang x H&M $60.
I've been looking for a metallic puffer jacket just like this one. I can't wait to wear it with an easy dress and booties this winter. Metallic Puffer Jacket, Alexander Wang x H&M $499.
